Joe Eichler built thousands of “contemporary” homes in California from the 1950s through the 1970s. These homes have developed quite a following: There are web sites in both Northern California and in Southern California. In addition, there are a number of real estate agents who specialize in these houses.
Eichler may have been the biggest and most successful of the post war housing developers who built contemporary architecture. But he was not unique. For example, Rummer homes in the Pacific Northwest used very similar designs.
Our Eichler
The Eichler we purchased had been through a number of owners. Some of these previous owners had little sympathy for what is now called “mid-century modern”. We felt the changes were too much to allow us to restore the house to original, so we have taken the course of updating the house using a contemporary or modernist esthetic.
